The Center Serving Persons with developmental disabilities in the greater Houston, Texas area. The Center’s two locations, Cullen Residence Hall and Willow River Farms, require the support of 266 employees and more than 250 volunteers to respond to the needs of our clients and the people we serve. These resources enable over 700 mentally retarded individuals to build skills and remain active in our community. The Center is a private not-for-profit United Way Agency, which has for more than 60 years served children and adults through educational, residential and work training programs. The philosophy of The Center is that every person has value and worth, is entitled to the highest quality of life, and should be treated with dignity.
Statement Regarding July 2009 Media Reports
As media outlets have recently reported, The Center is defending a
lawsuit recently filed by the mother of one of its former long-time
residents at The Center's Willow River Farms facility. The lawsuit
includes extremely inflammatory allegations of a sexual nature and of
sexual permissiveness and promotion at the facility. The Center
vehemently denies the inflammatory allegations in the petition.
The Center does not condone or promote the type of sexual conduct
described in the lawsuit and in comments to the media from the mother's
lawyer.
The Center and numerous regulatory and legal authorities have
investigated the mother's claims, including the Waller County Sheriff's
Department and the Department of Aging and Disability Services. None
found The Center or Willow River Farms in the wrong.
We take seriously the care that we provide to our residents. We intend
to fight and will disprove these groundless allegations against us.
